Autumn should be the best period for tufting closed trails in case you are not a noise fan, mainly following the Dusshera/Diwali break and even before the winter season. At this time, the trek is quiet, and fewer visitors are allowed to experience the wonders of Brahmatal without interference.

Even though Deoriatal-Chandrashila is mostly recognized for the rhododendron flowering, the same cannot be said of neglecting Brahmatal, as it appears equally beautiful in spring. There are clear blue skies and warm temperatures on bright summer days, but valleys and hills are still adorned with remnants of snow.

You’ll spot these blooming flowers as early as Lohajung, with the real show beginning between Bekaltal and Tilandi. As you trek out of Bekaltal, you’ll find yourself walking through a canopy of rhododendrons, their blossoms creating a colorful tunnel above you.

Keep an eye out for the flowers around Khorurai towards the end of your trek, adding a final burst of color to your journey.

For the best experience, plan your trek in early spring (March), when you can enjoy the snow and blooming flowers. Snow lingers on the trail from Tilandi upwards, especially around Brahmatal Lake, which sits at 12,250 ft. Most snow has melted by mid-April, making the trek feel entirely different.

Note: While Brahmatal is accessible in summer, spring offers the perfect mix of snow and blooms. Monsoon rains make the trek inaccessible, but autumn brings a new adventure.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival at Lohajung

Drive Duration: 10-11 hours from Rishikesh
Drive Distance: 260 km
Altitude: 7,550 ft (2,316 m)

Lohajung is a base camp for the Brahmatal trek, and a well-constructed road from Rishikesh leads you here. The trip includes visiting picturesque towns like Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Karnaprayag, where two rivers, Alakananda and Bhagirathi, meet the Madakini and Pindari rivers.

The road climbs these trees, then allows passage through the mountain roads full of trees and, during clear days, views of the Garhwal mountains. From Lohajung itself, a Nanda Ghunti peak overflows the view soon after reach. If such trips terminate around lunchtime and supper, the sunset colors of the peak will furnish any normal ordinary person with astonishing views.

Loha Jung has 12-15 neighboring habitations and a few local shopping centers; there are jackets, gloves, caps, and shoes if someone can buy them there. However, carrying all your trekking gear while leaving is better to not depend on such places. You’ll also find mobile networks available in most parts of Lohajung.

The name Lohajung translates to “War with Lohasur,” reflecting local folklore that describes a battle between Goddess Parvati and the demon Lohasur.


Day 2Trek from Lohajung to Gujreni

Trek Distance: 4.6 km
Trek Duration: 5 hours
Altitude Gain: 7,600 ft to 9,180 ft
Difficulty Level: Moderate; gradually ascending through forests on well-defined trails
Water Sources: You can refill your water bottles approximately 3 hours into the trek, with another opportunity at your lunch stop.

The trek begins at the central market (chowk) of Lohajung. From Bisht General Stores, head northwest on the marked trail. As you ascend through the upper region of Lohajung, you’ll traverse forested paths and pass a few scattered houses. Keep an eye out for Mandoli village on your left shortly into the hike.

As you gain elevation, the Kali Valley will come into view on your left, where the Kali and Pindari Rivers converge. Follow the water pipes that supply Lohajung, which run alongside the trail. After some time, you will pass the small settlement of Budla on your left, adorned with beautiful rhododendron trees, incredibly vibrant from February to March.

At approximately 8,500 ft, you will encounter a 10-meter bridge called Link-gaad, allowing you to cross a stream. After another two hours of trekking, you will reach Begum, an ideal resting point that offers stunning views of Navali Bugyal (145° SSE) and Bagdi Bugyal (125° SE). A short 10-15 minute walk from Begum will lead you to another stream, and from there, it’s just an hour’s hike to the Gujreni stream.

In winter, you will camp at Gujreni, surrounded by green and brown oak trees and rhododendrons. This campsite sits in a clearing with sunlight from around 8 AM until 5 PM. Ravi Ranjan Choudhary, Slope Manager at Indiahikes, notes, “I loved this campsite for the birds I saw, including the Himalayan Woodpecker, Asian barred owlet, blue-fronted redstart, and solitary snipe. I also heard the barking deer. The silence and seclusion, nestled within the forest alongside the gentle sound of the nearby stream, made it a special place.”

From Gujreni, the trail leads into dense oak forests, continuing with a moderate ascent. At points where the mountainside is to your left and the valley stretches to your right, you’ll catch your first glimpses of the majestic Mt. Trishul on the horizon. After about an hour and a half of climbing through the forest, you will reach a plateau with a small crater at its center, known as Khopdalia—a former dried lake. The campsite for Bekaltal lies just above this area.

A quick ten-minute trek from Khopdalia brings you to Bekaltal, encircled by a dense cluster of oak trees. The waters of Bekaltal are typically brown, indicating a high concentration of dissolved organic matter.

Brown lakes, often bordered by forests or wetlands, get their color from dark organic materials that dissolve in the water, similar to tea steeping in a bag. These dissolved substances tint the water brown, affecting the underwater ecosystem.

Overall, brown water lakes tend to have limited light penetration, leading to unique adaptations in algae that thrive in low-light conditions. These lakes may also be slightly acidic, often supporting few fish or other aquatic life.

Day 3Gujreni to Tilandi

  • Trek Distance: 2.9 km
  • Trek Duration: 4-5 hours
  • Altitude Gain: 9,180 ft to 10,495 ft
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate; an initial steep climb for an hour leading to a meadow, followed by a gentle ascent and a gradual descent toward Brahmatal.
  • Water Sources: None. Ensure you fill up with 2 liters of water before starting the trek, as it will be a long day.

Today’s trek is relatively short. Begin by heading southwest from the campsite. You’ll encounter a stream crossing just a few meters into your ascent. The trail then climbs steeply through the enchanting Oak and Rhododendron forest. To your left, the ridge opens up to reveal the valley below, while Bekaltal lies just below to your right.

Rhododendron trees dominate the landscape as you climb, transitioning to Oak trees midway through the trek. After about an hour in this beautiful forest, the snow line is followed by large grassy plains. On the other side is the astonishing sight of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti, along with their surrounding ranges.

You’ll typically find yourself drawn to the edge of these meadows, which form a ridge—your campsite for the night at Tilandi. Below lies the valley stretching from Lohajung to Wan, and directly across are the renowned meadows of the Roopkund trail: Ali and Bedni Bugyals.

Day 4Tilandi to Brahmatal

  • Trek Distance: 5.5 km
  • Trek Duration: 7-8 hours
  • Altitude Loss: 10,495 ft to 10,190 ft, passing through 12,250 ft
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate; a long descent that leads back to Lohajung.
  • Sources of Water: There are many water sources along the trail, without worrying about not following the unprepared step. Ensure at least 2 liters of water when setting off from Brahmatal.

Today’s excursion is an up-and-down trek whereby the trail is besieged by a tree line off and on. The Rhododendron and the Oak trees dominate the trees. As you head towards Jhandi Top, the highest point on the ridge, you will see all the trekking exercises and climbing.

From here, you can take in the stunning sight of the Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti ranges and trace the entire Roopkund trail from Wan to Roopkund. Spend at least twenty minutes at Jhandi Top to fully absorb the beauty around you—it’s a moment that often gives trekkers goosebumps.

As you continue along the ridge, the majestic mountains and expansive valleys unfold, revealing layers of 7 to 8 mountain ranges stretching into the distance. This sense of openness is unparalleled compared to most trekking experiences.

From Jhandi Top, choose the right trail that follows the mountain ridge towards Brahmatal Top 3728 m, which is the focus of this trek. Take in the great views of the mountains that never leave you as you go up the slope, and spend a while on the summit enjoying the picturesque views of the terrain.

After reaching Brahmatal, the last stretch of the trail offers a gradual descent, where the first sight of the picturesque lake completely gladdens the eyes. Next to the lake, you will see a small Nag Devta Mandir. If the lake is not frozen, one can expect to see a beautiful starry earth sky reflection on the lake’s calm surface.

The Brahmatal tent camping is situated at an altitude of 3,740m, is around 500m away from the lake, and is located at the edge of the slope. Never forget to enjoy the sunset view from the campsite; it’s worth the wait!

Day 5Brahmatal to Lohajung

  • Trek Duration: 7-8 hours
  • Altitude Loss: 10,190 ft to 7,550 ft

Start your descent to Lohajung right after breakfast, taking the trail directly from Brahmatal Lake. The vegetation remains sparse until you reach Jhandi Top, where the mountains play a game of hide and seek as you gradually ascend.

Once you reach Jhandi Top, take the left trail, which will guide you to Lohajung. The initial descent takes you through an open area, with the mountain views receding behind you.

About a kilometer down, you’ll re-enter the treeline predominantly filled with Oak trees. 

Later, stop at the clearing referred to as Khorurai, which has its meaning ‘Khoru’ as ‘oak.’ This is a nice place to take a little break from the day’s activity, and it can even be used as a possible camping site if you wish to proceed with your hike for another day.

You will join the larger main trail When you descend for another 1.3 km further down. When this is completed, again move down the steep slope of the Rhododendron forest and look for a paved path that largely connects people and livestock from the mountain villages of Lohajung.

This path is good and maintains two streams passed on the route. Approximately one hour of the styles down, the flight will reach your dormitories for the shepherds, or ‘Shawn,’ as local people call them. Both villagers and these shepherds themselves provide this shelter for animals.

While riding back, you can think of beautiful recollections of your trek and rejoice. Keep following the man-made trail from here, leading you down to Lohajung and ending your trek.

Day 6Lohajung to Rishikesh

  • On this day, you will begin your journey back to Rishikesh, expected to arrive around 6-7 PM.

A) Fly Directly to Dehradun:

We suggest flying to Dehradun so that you can enjoy your journey thoroughly. Most domestic airlines operate direct flights to Dehradun from all the metropolitan cities. From here, it is just a bus journey of about an hour to Rishikesh, which helps you get an additional rest day.

B) Fly to Delhi:

When flying to Delhi, be at the hotel the day before your pickup by 9.00 PM. Due to the innumerable tourists flying in, you can also avail yourself of a bus service to Rishikesh from Delhi.

2) Train Booking Options

A) Dehradun Shatabdi (Train No: 12017):

The train leaves New Delhi Railway Station at 6:45 A.M. and arrives at Haridwar around 11.30 A.M. Now, from Haridwar, you can take a bus to Rishikesh as it is just an hour away. The buses are available every after 10 to 15 minutes.

Important: Do not take the train to Dehradun, as it would take longer to reach Rishikesh.

B) Dehradun Jan Shatabdi (Train No: 12055):

The train leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin Station at 3:20 PM, reaching Haridwar at 7:33 PM. Return to Rishikesh overnight and report to your team the following day. If you can’t find a train, consider taking a Volvo AC overnight bus from Delhi:

C) Overnight Bus from ISBT Kashmiri Gate, Delhi:

Buses to Rishikesh leave frequently, almost every 30 minutes, and aren’t usually crowded. The journey takes about 8-9 hours, with AC bus tickets costing around ₹900. Aim for a bus that arrives at 5:30 AM.

Note: The final metro for the airport from New Delhi is 11.15 PM, and the price is 60. Whatever you decide regarding that type of transport, don’t forget that it has to be on the first day, on Day Zero, in Rishikesh.

3) How to reach Lohajung (The base Camp of the trip)

The base Camp of the trip) The bus departs directly from the Anand Vihar bus terminal in Delhi at 9:15 P.M for Mundoli/Lohajung. The bus reaches Kathgodam at 4:00 AM; then the buses continue to their final destination, Lohajung, at 5:30 PM.

Note: This is a very long and tiring journey.

A) Option 1: Delhi → Rishikesh/Dehradun → Lohajung (Cab)

Travel from Delhi to Rishikesh or Haridwar and take a shared cab for kuu leh ke lodge. The route goes like this: Devprayag Srinagar Rudraprayag Karnaprayag Tharali Debal Mundoli Lohajung U can also get hold of shared cabs from Dehradun, which plies on the same route via Rishikesh. A private vehicle can be hired from Rishikesh; However, this option costs more.

Shared taxis often go only up to Debal, so you may need to switch to another shared cab for the remainder of the journey to Lohajung.

You can also find shared cabs from Dehradun, which follow the same route via Rishikesh. You can hire a private vehicle from Rishikesh, though this option is more expensive.

Note: Taxi operators might need to be more familiar with Lohajung, so it’s helpful to provide directions based on the route mentioned.

B) Option 2: Delhi → Rishikesh/Dehradun → Karanprayag → Tharali → Lohajung (Bus)

From the Rishikesh Bus Stand, catch a bus on the Joshimath/Badrinath route and buy a ticket to Karanprayag. The journey from Rishikesh to Karanprayag takes around 6-7 hours. 

It’s best to take a bus that departs early, around 6:00 AM. Once in Karanprayag, take a shared Jeep to Tharali (47 km), following the scenic route along the Pindar River.

From Tharali, take a shared taxi to Debal (14 km), and once in Debal, arrange onward transport to Lohajung (24 km).

C) Option 3: Kathgodam/Haldwani → Almora → Baijnath → Gwaldam (Cab)

If traveling from the Kumaon region, shared cabs are available to Lohajung. The goal is to reach Baijnath or Gwaldam, from where you can find shared cabs heading to Debal. From Debal, you can follow the same method to reach Lohajung.

4) Planning Your Return Flight/Train Booking

When booking your return, allow extra time. If your trek ends on Day 6, wait to book return tickets for that day. Instead, book for Day 7.

  • If flying from Dehradun, use Day 7 as your return date.
  • If flying from Delhi, book an evening flight on Day 7 or a morning flight on Day 8.

For early morning flights from Delhi, aim for flights departing after 8:00 AM. Avoid flights between 6:00 AM and 8:00 AM, as you may not reach the airport in time.
