Squire Creek Pass

Trip report by: Bill DeYoung

"I would definitely recommend this trip to a friend."

Headed out in late July, just to sleep under the moon. Squire Creek Pass was open and easy to get to, though the trail was a lot more work than I remember. Begins with a pretty walk through alders above the creek. This becomes forest and the trail gets steeper with some pretty big roots and steps and some very muddy patches. Peek-a-boo views of the cliffs below Bullon and Three Fingers to the W until you come to the first of two large boulder fields. Good place to take a break and and admire the cliffs which would be laced with waterfalls earlier in the season.

After that the trail goes through sub-alpine fir and mt hemlock. Again, pretty steep and rugged, until you come out on the pass-- a wide open saddle of granite and heather meadows. Nice places to camp. Just laid out the bivy on the rock. The moon was low in the sky and very bright. Not much star-gazing and no meteors.

In the morning I scrambled up the ridge to the S for views down into the valley on the other side and over the saddle between Bullon and Three Fingers to Mt Baker. Spectacular cliffs.

No water at the pass and lots of bugs.
