Snow Lake, Alpine Lakes Wilderness

Trip report by Ken Boettger.

My brother and I hiked to Snow Lake for the exercise and a breath of fresh air. Beautiful view down to the lake from the overlook rock located 50 feet to the right of the wilderness boundary sign (beware of nude sunbathers).

This is a heavily used area. The Alpental ski parking lot was nearly full of cars (155 cars at 2pm). By 8pm, there were only 9 cars left. Nearly all the use is day hikers. For single people looking to meet others who share their outdoor interests, this is a GREAT place to go! For those who want solitude, go elsewhere. You aren't welcome here.

The talus slopes can really heat up on a sunny day, so take lots of water. There are a few reliable creek crossings, but use a water filter. In early July, the trail was snow-free up to the saddle (3.5 miles), but still snow-covered the last 1/2 mile down to the lake.

Stats: 4 miles one way, trailhead 3100', high point 4400', lake 4000'. Permit may be required for overnight stays. Contact the North Bend Ranger Station (click below).

Editor's Note: This area is affected by broadened permit restrictions. I found the trail to be much shorter than the guidebook says, maybe 2.5 miles.

Getting there: Drive I-90 to Snoqualmie Pass, exit 52, go another mile, and park at the Alpental lot. The trailhead is marked, across the main road.

Note: This is backcountry wilderness travel. Any trail can become very dangerous in winter conditions. You are responsible for informing yourself of the hazards and taking the necessary precautions. Please read Terms of Use.
