Ship Island Lake and Bighorn Crags, Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness

Trip report by: Scott Melville

Set in the Middle of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, Ship Island Lake is the crown jewel in an incredible tiara. Eleven miles from the Golden Lake trailhead, this is strenuous ridgeline hiking, with 500 feet of elevation gain/loss every mile or so.

Set at 8100 feet, mile long Ship Island lake is ringed by 10,000-foot peaks, with 1500-foot spires guarding its outlet. The fishing is excellent for rainbow & cutthroat; just remember your Idaho license.

This is great country to spend a week+, as their are numerous cirques & pothole lakes all over the Crags. The culmination of my packing experience!
