Sheep CanyonTrip report by: Colby Phillips
"I would definitely recommend this trip to a friend."
Sheep Canyon on the Southwest side of Mt. St. Helens offers easy accessibility to the shoulders of the mountain and open off-trail hiking just below the mountains hulk. From the trailhead, its only 2.2 miles gaining 1200 feet, to an intersection with the Loowit Trail which circles the mountain. Now the elevation is 4600 feet in a forest of small, wind-driven evergreens and open meadows.

From here, it is easy to continue up the mountain off the trail to explore the open timberline fields. You can also complete a loop by turning left (north) at the Loowit Trail intersection, and continuing along for about 2.7 miles to another trail intersection at the South Fork Toutle River Canyon. Then its 2.1 miles south back to the parking lot.
The trailhead is on Road 8123, 48 miles east of I-5.
