Shadow Lake and Sunrise Rim Trail, Mt. Rainier NP

If you just have an hour or two, take the easy day hike to Shadow Lake and explore the surrounding meadows. Take lunch. Take a map and compass and make a cross-country loop trip out of it. But definitely take a camera.

The Sunrise Rim trail is one of several short, easy nature walks from Yakima Park on the east side of the mountain. Stop at Shadow Lake, because if you go much farther you will run into reality: a dirt lot used by the Park Service to store maintenance vehicles.

Getting there: Start at Sunrise (Yakima Park) on Mount Rainier's east side. Ask for a nature trail map at the ranger station.

Note: This is backcountry wilderness travel. Any trail can become very dangerous in winter conditions. You are responsible for informing yourself of the hazards and taking the necessary precautions. Please read Terms of Use.
