Salmon Butte

Trip report by: Luke

"I would definitely recommend this trip to a friend."

Salmon Butte is a mediocre to difficult hike given a half mile elevation gain. The view at the top is worth it with a 360 degree view of the northern oregon cascades. There are also many openings on the way up in between some of the tallest sub-alpine trees you will ever see.

Getting There:

You take hwy. 26 from Portland then take a right at Salmon River Road right before the Zig Zag general store. Follow the road up about 6 miles to a bridge where the pavement subsequently ends and drive up a fairly steep gravel road about two miles until you see a very small clearing to the right and a small pull-over area on the left. This is about a quarter of a mile before the road ends. If you walk in one or two hundred yards there is a big open group campsight and the trail leads out from there.

If you want something with less of an elevation grade; park your car just before the previously mentioned bridge and hike up the Salmon River Trail which brings you through lush old growth forest which is really green during the rainy season and still does not get much snowfall even in the winter.

Note: This is backcountry wilderness travel. You are responsible for informing yourself of the hazards and taking the necessary precautions.
