"I would definitely recommend this trip to a friend."
The wildflowers atop Rowena Platuea are at their peak just before mothers day. You can park at the entrance to the lower plateau area or cross the road and park at Tom McCall preserve. If you choose the lower area be sure to go all the to the two ponds where you will see Meadowlarks and Woodpeckers. This is an area owned by the Nature Conservancy so be sure to follow there rules and don't leave the trail.
The upper trail takes you to an excellent view of the Columbia River Gorge - but beware of the Poison Oak! You might also see rattlesnakes in the area so don't get too consumed with all of the wildflowers. The climb to the top can be strenuous at points but the view is definately worth it. Be sure to pack a lunch wichever trail you choose as either trail will take you 1-2 miles from the entrance. You will find yourself spending more time than you thought viewing the amazing wildflower display.
Rowena is 5 iles East of The Dalles off of Hwy 84. Follow the windy road up the side of the Gorge wall. Keep an eye out for Deer on your way.
Note: This is backcountry wilderness travel. You are responsible for informing yourself of the hazards and taking the necessary precautions.
