Trip report by Jeffrey Cooper
Here is the perfect day hike, only 30 minutes from Seattle, and you can turn around any time you like without sacrificing the reward.
The three of us started at the Talapus lake trailhead, and hiked on well-kept summer trails, seldom very steep, but constantly gaining elevation. We knew there would be a lot of people (we guessed about 100 on the entire trail), so we set our sites on the higher lakes.
From Talapas to Rainbow Lake is a serious elevation gain (1200 ft.). A few wash-outs, but not bad. The reward at the top is grand. Stunning views of Mt. Rainier and the surrounding area from the ridge on Pratt Mt. Several beautiful lakes. We continued on to each of them.
Finally arriving at Mason Lake, we took a healthy and wonderful swim. The water was great. There are more people here, because the lake is accessible from the Mason Lake trailhead.
If you're in it for the day hike, enjoy Rainbow and Island lakes, then turn around. Continuing to Mason Lake means a descent of 500' for a lake very similar to Talapas. We couldn't quite manage Mt. Defiance (our original goal), which is said to have a stunning vista. So, if you are staying overnight, don't miss this! The whole trip took 7.5 hours and we gained 1900'.
