"I would probably recommend this trip to a friend."
Our party of five hiked up the trail to Rachel Lake in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Fall color is at a peak; even at the trail head the colors were beautiful. The condition of the trail itself was mediocre; the result of heavy snowpack last winter and spring and a very late melt off this summer. Some very large trees block the trail, but could be climbed over. Some even had steps chopped in them!
The camping spots at Rachel Lake were in excellent shape; do be prepared for some very cold nights. Frost heave pushed up from the soil each morning. The additional short hike up to Rampart Ridge was well worth the effort. The colors there were perhaps just past their peak (as of 10/16). It's a trip best made during the week, as crowds swell on weekends.
