"I would definitely recommend this trip to a friend."
On a summer weekend, the Buck Meadows area east of Ellensburg is a busy gathering place. Each spring, however, the forest road remains closed by snow, and the area offers quiet, peaceful, early season hikes with excellent views of the north Cascades.
Depending on the snow line, in late spring hikers can drive to within a few miles of Buck Meadows. In the shady sections of road, there are large patches of remaining snow. The meadows, exposed to the east Cascade sun, are mostly snow-free.
If you can get away for a backpacking weekend, camp at Buck Meadows or Frost Meadows. Then either walk up to the 5760-foot Frost Mountain Lookout, or hike six miles from Frost Meadows to 6290-foot Quartz Mountain. Either summit will give you excellent views north to the Stuart Range and Enchantment Peaks on a clear day.
Getting there: From Ellensburg, turn east on Manastash Road and follow it east into Wenatchee National Forest, where it becomes Forest Road 31. When you reach the snow line, park safely to the side, and continue on the road to Buck Meadows. From here, follow Forest Road 3100 to Frost Meadow and Quartz Mountain.
