This easy trail follows the knife-edged Ptarmigan ridge that connects Artist Point to the foot of Mt. Baker. The views of Shuksan and Baker from every step of the trail make it worth carrying extra film on this shadless, dry hike. And don't forget snacks, because the ridge invites you to just sit down, catch your breath, and take in the scenery. For variety, return to the trailhead by way of Table Mountain from a marked turnoff.
On a clear day, you'll wish you could find some shade, but don't get stuck picking your way down this trail after dark. Speaking of night, Artist Point itself makes an excellent star-gazing spot, and it has a couple of tent pads just off the parking lot.

If you're looking for an overnight trip on the ridge, go about 8 miles in and pick a scenic spot beneath Coleman Pinnacle, or walk downhill off the trail to the barren shores of an unnamed lake.
Stats: 9 or 10 miles one way, depending on snow levels. Nominal elevation gain and loss. High point 5950'. Take plenty of water, and have a Plan B in case snow still blocks the road or trail.
Getting there: Drive to the town of Glacier, then continue up, past the Mt. Baker ski area, to Artist Point. The trailhead is at the end of the parking lot.
