Trip report by Reuben Slasor
I started my hike at 9:00am and there were only a dozen cars in the parking lot. This was the best hike I have made this year. I really loved the small trail around Pratt Mountain. The hike was mostly snow-free and dry. After our heavy winter, the trail was covered by snow for the last quarter of a mile, but it is rather easy to follow the dirty snow trail to the lakes. And yes, the lakes were still partly snow-covered, especially Island Lake.

I had planned on hiking to Pratt Lake, but after I spoke to a hiker who told me of an almost religious experience of unbelievable beauty and splendor on Pratt Mountain, I had to look for myself. I never realized how beautiful this trail was. It reminded me of Rampart Ridge and Rachel Lake. I passed Rainbow Lake, Blazer Lake, Talapus Lake, Olallie Lake, and Island Lake.
This was a great hike and I have a good sunburn to show for it. When I returned I was told about a thunderstorm in the Seattle area. Sometimes the better weather is in the mountains.
Reuben really knows the Alpine Lakes Wilderness and is looking for hiking partners who aren't afraid of a challenge. Reuben's web site is linked on the Bearings page.
