Mount Pilchuck

Trip report by: Jerry Carson

"I would definitely recommend this trip to a friend."

Had some time to kill so I headed east hoping to go "up 'chuck". Began at the trailhead at 9AM under beautiful sunshine. At about 4200' I stopped for 15 minutes for sunscreen, a snack, and just to "smell the roses". Mt. Baker was awesome with Shuksan also peeking out in the distance.

The route above 4200' was completely snow-covered to the summit. Had crampons and ice axe but only used trekking poles. At 11 AM I made the scramble around the lookout and up the latter.

Lookout appears to be in fine condition. Spent 45 minutes enjoying the views then practically ran down the mountain in 50 minutes. Snow was kind of slushy but no postholing. Although, some melt-outs near rocks do have the potential to wreck your outing. Had alot of fun doing my "Koflach Telemark" technique coming down.

Incidentally, the person(s) responsible for the upkeep of the road to the trailhead apparently died. Years ago. Be prepared to subtract 6-8 months from the longevity of your vehicle. Otherwise, a great trip.
