Trip report by Sateev
Made my annual June pilgrimage to Mt. Townsend last Saturday. The clouds were supposed to clear by noon, but they were fairly thick until we got to the top of the ridge.
Rhodies were not yet blooming in the understory of the wonderful old forest but the alpine wildflowers were beginning to show themselves in the south facing meadows on the way up. Only a few patches of snow left on the trail, but plenty on the mighty Olympic peaks visible from the top.
The panoramic view of the Puget Sound was clouded, but we lay in the sun on the top and watched the clouds cover and uncover various jagged peaks in the Olympics.
If you've never done this hike you ought to (pick a clear day) and if you haven't been there lately you should return. Cheers, Sateev.
Getting there: Multiple trailheads provide access to Mt. Townsend. The Last Water Camp trailhead is 1200' higher than the Townsend Creek trailhead. Both are accessed off Highway 101 near the Quilcene RS.
