Cool Trails: Mount St Helens, WA Northwest Hiking Trails

Cougar, Mt. St. Helens NVM

Trip report by: Jason R Thein

"I would definitely recommend this trip to a friend."

Aaaah..the 4th of July weekend and where else could you possibly go but to Mount Saint Helens! We camped at Swift Forest campground. They finally got the water back up to normal level. The live band at the Eagle Cliff store put on a hell of a good show on Sat and Sun nights. Followed by some really awesome fireworks at the water. On Monday we went and did the Lava Canyon Trail it has views of numerous waterfalls and a nice suspension bridge. The trail down to the ship is a little steep and treacherous in some spots. You will have to use two ladders to get to the ship but they are already in place. The total trip is about 6 miles.

Note: This is backcountry wilderness travel. Any trail can become very dangerous in winter conditions. You are responsible for informing yourself of the hazards and taking the necessary precautions. Please read Terms of Use.
