McKenzie River NRA

Trip report by: Colby Phillips

"I would definitely recommend this trip to a friend."

The McKenzie River, which runs through the Willamette National Forest in the western shadow of the Oregon Cascades, is an excellent place to hike and bike along the 27 mile McKenzie River National Recreation Trail. There are many jumping off points at campgrounds and trailheads along the river from Hwy. 126, which runs parallel to the river for the length of the trail.

At the northern end, there several spectacular waterfalls near Clear Lake, where there are several quiet campgrounds with drive-in and hike-in tent sites.

The trail itself is up and down singletrack, following the river as it makes its way through the Tamolitch Valley. The northern end of the trail is steeper and rougher, with many more roots, ruts and sharp rocks to test your skills. Below the Tamolitch dry falls southward, the riding is somewhat easier but just as scenic and enjoyable.

Notes
The McKenzie River trail runs along Hwy. 126 from Clear Lake near OR Hwy 20, down to the town of McKenzie Bridge, approximately 50 miles east of Eugene, OR. Loop rides can be made using the highway, but is not generally recommended due to the heavy traffic and lack of reasonable shoulder space on the road.

Note: This is backcountry wilderness travel. Any trail can become very dangerous in winter conditions. You are responsible for informing yourself of the hazards and taking the necessary precautions. Please read Terms of Use.
