Methow Valley Horseback Riding

When your feet get tired, or you just want to cover some impressive mileage in a day, get on a horse. The Methow Valley's popular Mazama resort is just one of the places where you can find an outfitter for rides from an hour to a week or more.

We've rented horses for other excursions, including a memorable day in the Great Smoky Mountains...but that's another story. This half-day ride in the North Cascades was enhanced by the company of our new friends from England. We also were fortunate to have well-behaved animals and an excellent guide.

Half a day on a horse is nice for someone who's new to riding. But if you want to do something fun and get some views, go out for a full day or two. A four-day trip for two into the Pasayten Wilderness would cost around $800 (1994), including everything but your toothpaste.

Stats: Horses can easily cover 20 miles a day, with pack animals carrying more stuff than you imagined possible. Equestrian experience is generally not required.

Getting there: Drive the North Cascades Highway east almost to Winthrop, and turn off at the sign for Mazama. Ask at the lodge for information on renting horses.

Note: This is backcountry wilderness travel. Any trail can become very dangerous in winter conditions. You are responsible for informing yourself of the hazards and taking the necessary precautions. Please read Terms of Use.
