Northwest Hiking Trails

Lake Serene, Washington

Trip report by Ranger Mike

This trail is not officially open, so please don't get upset over the lack of signing and other trailhead amenities. I started at the lower trailhead. The upper trailhead will likely be closed in the future. As it is, the road is now closed a quarter mile before the upper trailhead.

The lower portion of the trail follows an old forest road. The first challenge is a creek crossing. The water was over the boottops, so gaiters are a must if you like dry feet. There were many windfalls and part of the trail follows a creekbed.

Beyond the upper trailhead, the new Lake Serene Trail is in excellent condition - new puncheons, stairways, turnpikes and bridges. There are a few tent sites at Lake Serene. Someone must have come in and cleaned up the areas as they were remarkably clean. There is a new box toilet just off the trail to the left, just before descending to the lake.

There was a lot of trash along the lower portion of the trail, particularly near the trailhead. Please help by packing some of it out. Also, it's a shame that this trail isn't officially open yet, and there is already evidence of switchback cutting.

Stats: 3.0 miles, 2000 feet, Easy.
