Cool Trails: Lanham Lake Snowshoe, WA Northwest Hiking Trails

Lanham Lake Snowshoe

Trip report by: Denis Du Bois

"I would recommend this trip to a friend."

When avalanche conditions are uncertain, commercially groomed cross-country ski trails are a good bet. They’re also great places to learn and practice skiing. Many of us pinheads remember the Nordic Center at Stevens Pass as the Mill Creek road, before the Nordic Center was built. A day of skiing here should include a snowshoe trip to Lanham Lake.

The Lanham Lake trail (shown on USGS Labyrinth 7½ minute) starts just east of the parking lot, marked by a sign that might be buried under snow. It’s an easy, four-mile round trip that gains 1200 feet, for a Cool Trails Effort Rating of 2.

When you get back to the trailhead, ski the trails of the Stevens Pass Nordic Center, which is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 4. Skiing there when the Center is open will require a trail pass, $9 for adults and $6.50 for children and seniors. The Center rents skis and snowshoes, and offers ski lessons. Most of the numerous connecting trails start out with a very slow, steady climb, with steeper options.

Getting there: Drive US 2 east to the summit (where the alpine ski area is), and beyond it by about 6 miles. Turn right at a large sign marking the entrance to the Stevens Pass Nordic Center and park in their parking lot.

Note: This is backcountry wilderness travel. Any trail can become very dangerous in winter conditions. You are responsible for informing yourself of the hazards and taking the necessary precautions. Please read Terms of Use.
