Lake Margaret sits in a wilderness basin along the crest of the Cascades, surrounded by rocky ridges and dwarf trees. The official trail is through a clearcut, but if you look at the map you'll see there is a shorter route on a forest road. The road is closed about 2 miles from the ridgetop. Nice views from the ridge, either way. Campsites on both sides of the lake, with the best ones on the opposite side. Optional trips to Twin Lakes (one of the twins is really a marsh) and beyond.

Getting there: From I-90 exit at Hyak and follow the asphalt road to its end. Continue on dirt to the trailhead parking lot. There's also a back way in, which shortens the hike considerably.
