Lake Basin Trail, Norse Peak Wilderness

When the avalanche danger is very, very low, this trail can be fantastic for skilled skiers. It's an easy place to get into trouble if you aren't in total control of your skis. Test the snow before traversing avalanche terrain.

You will probably have to park some distance away and take the skier shuttle to the ski lodge. If you're skiing Crystal and the lift is running up the east side toward Crown Point, take the lift. Otherwise, ski east from the upper parking lot into the Bullion Creek valley. Follow the valley 2 miles to Bullion Basin, which is the first of many bowls along this route.

From Bullion Basin, head east through a 6100' saddle and then traverse north along the east side of the ridge. At 3 miles is Cement Basin; at 4 miles, Lake Basin; at 4.5 miles, Big Crow Basin. Each basin offers fine views, telemark bowls, and campsites. You can even go to the summit of Norse Peak, for great views of Mt. Rainier.

Stats: 4 miles, elevation gain 1600', loss 500', high point 6400'.

Getting there: Trail begins at the top of Crystal Mountain's Blue Bell run, or thereabouts.

Note: Requires ski-mountaineering and route-finding skills, and advanced knowledge of avalanche safety.

Note: This is backcountry wilderness travel. Any trail can become very dangerous in winter conditions. You are responsible for informing yourself of the hazards and taking the necessary precautions. Please read Terms of Use.
