June Lake/Swift Creek, Mt. St. Helens NVM

Photo: June Lake tripThis is an area of Mt. St. Helens' south side where you can get away from the snowmobiles somewhat, on a system of well-marked ski trails that only sometimes cross paths with them. On a clear day, the views of Mt. St. Helens's snow-covered slopes make it well worthwhile. When there are low clouds and fog, you won't see a thing, and this becomes just another long trudge through the forest--it could be anywhere. June Lake's name might be appropriate this year, as it should remain completely frozen until June.

Photo: "This Area Is Open to Foot Travel." Adam rests his snowshoe on a six-foot signpost barely emerging from the snow.

We snowshoed a route different from that in the guide books. The woods are fairly open when there's plenty of snow, so cross-country navigation is manageable. One way to reach June Lake is to begin from the Marble Mountain Sno Park warming hut and follow skier trail 244 up the east side of Swift Creek. At the 3200' level, leave the trail and swing east through a low divide and into the meadows of June Lake, elev. 3250. From here, it's just a short jaunt to the edge of the lava flows, elev. 3400'. At this point, you're about 2 miles from the Sno Park, as the crow flies. Return by the June Lake trail and road 83, like the book says, or be creative.

Stats: Lava flows, 2 to 3 miles one way, elevation gain 700', high point 3400'.

Getting there: From I-5, take 530 east. Pick up your permits at Jack's Market (reservations may be required). Go through Cougar, where 530 becomes 90. Turn left on 83 and follow it to the Marble Mountain Sno Park (permit required). Ski north on the snowed-in road.

Note: This is backcountry wilderness travel. Any trail can become very dangerous in winter conditions. You are responsible for informing yourself of the hazards and taking the necessary precautions. Please read Terms of Use.
