Northwest Hiking Trails

Island Lake, ALW

Trip report by Reuben Slasor

This trail will take you to Talapus Lake first, then around Ollallie Lake, then up to Pratt Mtn. Then follow the trail to Island Lake at 4300'. The weather was great: 75F and clear. This is a difficult hike due to the altitude gain and distance. The trail was very muddy for the first two miles and I ran into some snow at 3500'.

PhotoThere is a great view of Mt. Rainier from the top of the ridge. I hiked through the snow for a quarter mile to reach the lake. I discovered why they called the lake Island Lake. A small island with some twisted trees is located near the stream outlet.

Stats: 6 miles, elevation gain 1750', high point 4300'.

Getting there: From I-90 near Snoqualmie Pass, take exit 45 and use trail #1039.
