Trip report by Colby Phillips.
South Ice Cave is a volcanic tube that extends a few hundred feet into the ground. Stalactites of ice hang in the cool darkness almost year-round. The cave includes a small ice pond and ends at an ice plug.
Stats: Cabin Lake campground is a nice drive-in camp that makes a good base camp from which to explore Fort Rock and South Ice Cave. Its has 14 tent sites spread out among a ponderosa pine forest that sits at the edge of the ancient lake bed.
