Northwest Hiking Trails

Grasshopper Pass

Trip report by Todd Kuhlman

On July 2, 1998, I did a day hike from the trail head by Meadow Campground almost to Grasshopper Pass. This is south of Harts Pass in the Northern Cascades near Mazama.

The trail is part of the Pacific Crest Trail. The trail is mostly above timberline, so the views are great. After about the first mile, you round a corner to some spectacular mountain views and glaciated valleys.

There were still about 6 snow fields that had to be crossed before getting to Grasshopper Pass. I turned around at the 5th snow field (about 4-4.5 miles in). There is no water readily available on or immediately near the trail (also mentioned in the book), except for the point where I turned around. This would be an easy hike into the basin to get water.

If you only have a couple hours, one could hike to the pass for the mountain views. The drive up to the trail head has a spectacular view of the Methow Valley. This is a great trail for the views and I can see why it made the book. This is definitely one to hike again.

Stats: The map is Green Trails #50 (Washington Pass). About 11 miles round trip to Grasshopper Pass with a gain of 1000 ft in and 1000 ft out (according to 100 Hikes pages 192-193).

Note: This is backcountry wilderness travel. Any trail can become very dangerous in winter conditions. You are responsible for informing yourself of the hazards and taking the necessary precautions. Please read Terms of Use.
