Gold Butte Lookout

Trip report by: Rex Kamstra

"I would definitely recommend this trip to a friend."

Photos: [Top] Gold Butte Lookout with Mt. Hood in the background. [Bottom] Mt. Jefferson viewed from Gold Butte.

The lookout cabin was constructed in 1934 and has not been staffed since the 1970's. Restoration work has been ongoing. Views from the top include Mt. Hood to the northeast, Bull of the Woods Lookout to the north, and an excellent view of Mt. Jefferson to the southeast.

Driving directions: From the north end of the town of Detroit, take FS Road #46 east toward Breitenbush. At 4.5 miles, turn left on FS Road #4696 signed for Elk Lake. At nearly a mile, turn left on FS Road 4697. This road is full of potholes, so take it easy. At 5 miles up in a saddle, stay right at two intersections. There may be a locked gate here. If so, it adds about a mile of road walking to the journey on a fairly gentle grade. If you are able to drive to the end of the road, it's just 1/4 mile up to the lookout via several short and moderately steep switchbacks.

Note: This is backcountry wilderness travel. You are responsible for informing yourself of the hazards and taking the necessary precautions.
