Ghost Ridge, Mt. Hood, Oregon

PhotoTrip reported by Colby Phillips.

Ghost Ridge is an excellent cross-country skiing destination for great views of Mt. Hood to the north and all the way down to Mt. Jefferson and the Three Sisters to the south-but you have to earn it. The way to the top of the ridge is off trail, and requires switchbacking up fairly steep slopes through the trees. An open ridgetop offers the best views.

From the Barlow Pass Sno Park, ski the Twin Lakes trail to the Shoulder (an open area on the side of the ridge) and then continue to a high point on the trail. Leave the trail and enter a small stand of trees and start climbing up the slope to the high point at 4925'. Heading east down off the ridge gets you back to the trail, but through thick woods. This is map-and-compass territory for those not familiar with the area.

Getting there: From Portland, take I-84 east to Hood River, then Hwy 35 south to Barlow Pass Sno Park.
