Trip report by Colby Phillips.
Fort Rock is an interesting formation that rises out of the Central Oregon high desert. A volcanic eruption in an ancient shallow lake formed this natural rock fortress. You can hike around the interior of the semi-circular rock wall, or scramble up the onto the tops of the walls for sweeping views of the desert and the Central Cascades.

Stats: Cabin Lake campground is a nice drive-in camp that makes a good base camp from which to explore Fort Rock and South Ice Cave. Its has 14 tent sites spread out among a ponderosa pine forest that sits at the edge of the ancient lake bed. Water is supposed to be turned on May - September, but hadn't been yet when we visited over Memorial Day.
Getting There: Fort Rock, South Ice Cave and Cabin Lake campground are all off of Forest Road 18 near the tiny town of Fort Rock. Take Hwy. 97 to La Pine, OR, and turn East on Finley Butte Road (Forest Road 22). Take Finely Butte Road 25.5 miles to Forest Road 18 (gravel) and turn South. Go 6 miles to Cabin Lake campground, 15 miles to Fort Rock.
