Fairview PeakTrip report contributed by Colby Phillips.
Fairview Peak and Bohemia Mountain are two 5900' peaks that rise from a saddle that hides an old mining ghost town. Located in the Umpqua National Forest, the area was host to gold mining from the 1880s to the 1930s, and there is still some mining claim activity today.
Photos: Fairview Peak (Phillips photos).
From the Bohemia Saddle, you can hike to the top of either peak; Fairview Peak has a fire lookout tower at the top. If you look closely, you can see the old mining buildings from the trails, and can bushwhack off trail from the saddle for a look around.
Stats: 1 mile from Bohemia Saddle to either peak, 700' elevation gain, high points 5900' (peaks).
Getting there: From Portland drive I-5 south and take the Cottage Grove exit, following the signs to Dorena Lake and along Brice Creek. Turn right at the sign for Fairview Peak, Forest Road 2212. Go for 8.4 miles to Champion Saddle and turn left onto road 2460, 1.1 miles to Bohemia Saddle. The road near the top of the saddle is very rough (made it OK in my Subaru Outback) and may be blocked at some point by downed trees or washouts. Drive to where you can and walk from there.
