Northwest Hiking Trails

Deserters Creek

Trip report by: Sunday Trippers

"I would definitely recommend this trip to a friend."

The effort turned out to be a 45 minute hike through the beautiful Cariboo alongside Nazko Creek. Along the trail we were amazed with the effort and time put into maintaining and creating the paths. Be careful of wildlife!!

40 minutes into our walk Deserters Creek joined us on our hike, replacing the Nazko. We were stunned with what we did and did not see. The small creek has carved a gorge through a 150 foot rock wall. The adventerous will be able to cross the very cold waters easily with the help of logs and sticks. Getting further is a challenge, possibly impassable due to weather and water levels.

The bottom of the canyon is 10 feet wide and has a small waterfall which serves as a gateway to an amazing pool with an impressive waterfall gushing into it. Apparently there are falls farther up, but we were unable to pass the second fall. The pool inside the gorge is very cave like with only a bit of sky visible.

GETTING THERE: From Quesnel, on the West Fraser Road, continue 15 minutes along the road until you come to a bridge crossing the Nazko Creek. There is ample parking on the left side of the road on the Quesnel side of the bridge. The trail head is on the right side of the road and the trail is easily visible. If you don't trust our directions they are available at the Quesnel Tourist Information Center.

Note: This is backcountry wilderness travel. You are responsible for informing yourself of the hazards and taking the necessary precautions.
