Deep Creek

Trip report by: Denis Du Bois

"I would probably recommend this trip to a friend."

When Yakima Park and the Sunrise side of Mt. Rainier are still under spring snow, the most scenic and accessible trails in this area are just outside the park’s boundaries. There are several trails that provide excellent, close-up views of the mountain, without being too close to take it all in. Deep Creek trail is one of them.

Deep Creek trail leads from Highway 410 to the 5800-foot Dalles Ridge in 3.1 miles of serious ascent. Whatever the weather, the mature forest intercepts the rain, sun and, unfortunately, the views, until you reach the 5400-foot level. This is where you will find the first, outstanding view of Mt. Rainier.

When you reach the ridge and intersect with the Dalles Ridge trail, you can wander for miles in either direction. If the view of Rainier is clear, you’ll probably be content to sit right down and enjoy it for a while. The former fire lookout site at Noble Knob is 1.7 miles to your left. Mutton Mountain is to your right, with Corral Pass 1.4 miles away in that direction.

June is a good time to visit Dalles Ridge, because there’s enough snow at the top of Corral Pass to keep that road gated, but snowmobilers have turned their attention to other forms of recreation. An appealing option for backpackers is to hike the closed road to Corral Pass campground, elevation 5700 feet, and make a base camp there. You’ll find many excursion possibilities from there among the network of high-country trails, including some in the Norse Peak Wilderness. Return to the trailhead via the Deep Creek trail, to make a loop.

Getting there: Drive Highway 410 from Enumclaw to Greenwater and continue southeast past The Dalles campground. Just after the Buck Creek turnoff on your right, watch for a short road on your left leading to some cabins. If you come to the Corral Pass road turnoff, you’ve passed your turn. At the end of this short road is the trailhead, elevation 2900 feet. There are two trails that pass through this trailhead. The Deep Creek trail, number 1196, is the one that climbs most steeply. (Your elevation at the ridge will be exactly double this elevation.) Northwest Forest Pass required. Dogs are welcome on this trail.
