Northwest Hiking Trails

Mirror LakeMirror and Cottonwood Lakes, GRW

Trip report by Reuben Slasor

Photo: Mirror Lake begins to thaw. (Reuben Slasor photo.)

It did not rain during the hike, but the mountain tops were covered with fog. The trail was gone after 50 yards of hiking, then it was just snow and more snow. Fishing was not possible because the lakes were frozen and snow-covered. In the snow, this is a great hike for training people to find their way using a topography map and mountain landmarks.

I enjoyed the hike to the lake. If you're a snowboard fan, bring it along you will find some great slopes. Normally, this time of year you would not find any snow at all, but this year the high mountain lakes may not be open until August.

Stats: 1 mile, high point 4200'. The road makes the climb for you, so you will only need to gain 600 feet during the one mile hike.

Getting there: The dirt road was in great shape going to Lost lake. The last one-forth mile of the road to the Mirror Lake trail was truck material. You don't need four wheel drive, but you do need ground clearance.

Note: This is backcountry wilderness travel. Any trail can become very dangerous in winter conditions. You are responsible for informing yourself of the hazards and taking the necessary precautions. Please read Terms of Use.
