Corral Pass and Dalles Ridge, Norse Peak Wilderness

The views from near the summit of Mutton Mountain on a clear day will make up for the trailhead hassles on this trip. Drop your skis and skiers at the snow line, probably very close to some cabins on road 7174 just off Hwy. 410. Then park about a mile away at the Silver Creek Sno-Park along Crystal Mountain Road, and rejoin your party.

The road climbs steadily through a long series of switchbacks. At its end is Corral Pass CG, an excellent spot to camp for the weekend. From here, follow the ridgetop north along the wilderness boundary, up to Mutton Mountain. Looking west, Mt. Rainier fills the frame. The views in other directions are equally superb. Have another Powerbar.

Remember this area for hiking next summer. You can drive to Corral Pass, and the trail below Dalles Ridge continues to Noble Knob in only 3.7 miles. Two other fine trails start here--scope it out.

Stats: 4.5 miles, elevation gain 2900', high point 5700'.

Getting there: Trip begins on road 7174 near its intersection with Hwy. 410, just north of the Crystal Mountain turnoff.

Note: Skiing beyond the end of the road requires route-finding and ski-mountaineering skills.

Note: This is backcountry wilderness travel. Any trail can become very dangerous in winter conditions. You are responsible for informing yourself of the hazards and taking the necessary precautions. Please read Terms of Use.
