Cast Lake

Trip report by: Grenoble9

"I would definitely recommend this trip to a friend."

Fortunately, there are two methods of access to the trails which will take you to Cast Lake. The access road from Road 2627-207 is crazy treacherous. Do not even attempt this without a truck or other vehicle with high clearance. Your Subaru will suffer. Skip it if it has been raining.

At the end of the road you'll find trailheads for both the Zig Zag Mountain Trail and the Burnt Lake Trail. Take the Burnt Lake Trail #772.

It's about 4 miles from the trailhead to Cast Lake. The forested path is wide for the first 2 miles, then takes a jaunt through meadows shoulder-high with wildflowers and berries. The ascent is moderate, with lots of flat sections providing nice breaks.

I was there on a sunny Tuesday and didn't see another soul until I got back to Hwy 26. Deer tracks outnumbered boot prints.

When I got to the lake, two hawks circled the lake looking for fish. They came over to get a closer look at me and flew off over the ridge.

This spot will be lovely in autumn as the mountains are fairly well populated with deciduous trees and shrubs. The lake is clean and sparkly. The only sound is the wind in the firs. There are established campsites just above the lake.

Note: This is backcountry wilderness travel. You are responsible for informing yourself of the hazards and taking the necessary precautions.
