Camp Muir--two times in one Memorial Day weekend

Trip report by: Bill DeYoung

"I would definitely recommend this trip to a friend."

Got two invitations to hike to Camp Muir. One from Dan who'd never been and one from Bill who wanted to try out his plastic boots. Dan and I went on Thursday and had good weather, though windy and cool with severe wind and some snow pellets at the top.

This all passed by the time we were down to Anvil Rock at 9,000'. Snow was soft and we tended to post-hole below there. Watched a Raven pull barrel rolls and heard a Blue Grouse on Alta Vista. Not many people.

Went back on Saturday with Bill. Windy and cool at Paradise. We passed many people turning back because of the wind. "We went until it just stopped being fun." We decided that's how far we'd go.

At Panorama Pt we hooked up with a guy from Indiana on his own and bucked 40-50 mph winds and stinging pellet snow a little past McClure Rock (7,700') then turned back. Once we got below Panorama Point it brightened up a bit, but the upper mt never cleared. Stopped for pictures and a were courted by a very tame Finch.

Checked in with the ranger and Muir was still getting 50mph winds and 5' snow drifts. The ranger said there were 38 people headed up. Never got a report on Bill's boots.
