Buck Creek

"I would probably recommend this trip to a friend."

Highway 410 can be dicy in snowy weather, but that doesn't stop all kinds of skiers headed for Crystal Mountain and the numerous cross-country ski trails on the way.

Buck Creek trail is a gentle logging road, excellent terrain for beginners. The road reaches about five miles into the foothills east of Greenwater, and gains 1800 feet. The first mile or two are sometimes accessible to four-wheel-drive vehicles, which destroy the ski track, and obstruct the trail with large holes, where they eventually get stuck.

Fortunately, each new snowfall heals the trail.

The first three miles of this route are relatively avalanche-safe, and the trail is enjoyable in any weather, even if the visibility is poor. At four miles, there is a knoll with a view, and a good place to stop for lunch. Surprisingly, this close to Mt. Rainier, there is not a view of the mountain from this trail.

Getting there: Drive Highway 410 east from Enumclaw to Greenwater, then continue another 11 miles. Start looking for a turnoff on your right in about half a mile. The road crosses the White River and forks at 1/4 mile. Take the left fork, road 7160. In less than a mile, come to the Buck Creek Church Camp, and park alongside the road. Arrive early, to get a parking space.

Note: This is backcountry wilderness travel. You are responsible for informing yourself of the hazards and taking the necessary precautions.
