Trip report by: Denis Du Bois
"I would definitely recommend this trip to a friend."
The ridge between Bessemer Mountain and Green Mountain offers dynamite views of the surrounding snowy countryside, on a clear day. The trip starts at the Middle Fork Snoqualmie River Road and climbs quickly. As the trees get smaller, the views get bigger, until you have a 360-degree panorama.
In the spring, this public road is hikeable for some distance, because the snow is usually firm. Snowshoes or skis are often desirable after that point. The summits get fresh snow well into March.
There are several logging spurs on both sides as you walk, ski, or snowshoe up the four-mile road toward Bessemer Mountain. Continue to the 3600-foot level, where there is a road intersection. For the best views and a steeper trail, go right and continue to the 5028-foot summit. For perfectly good views and an easier trail, go left to the ridge top, at 4600 feet. Winds at the top can be brisk, so dress accordingly.
Getting there: Take Exit 34 from Interstate 90 east of North Bend, go north, then turn right on SE Middle Fork Snoqualmie Road. In just under seven miles, park at a turnoff on your left. The road is gated at this point and closed to motorized use, but, as the sign says, "NON-MOTORIZED USE WELCOME". Please park considerately. There is room to park about six cars (or two Excursions and a VW Bug) and the parking area always fills up.
Note: This is backcountry wilderness travel. Any trail can become very dangerous in winter conditions. You are responsible for informing yourself of the hazards and taking the necessary precautions. Please read Terms of Use.
