Northwest Hiking Trails

Benchmark Mountain

Trip report by: miket@lucks.com

"I would definitely recommend this trip to a friend."

Follow West Cady Ridge trail about 2 miles to saddle between West Cady and Excelsior Mt (3600'). The trail didn't have a lot of snow to this point and was fairly easy to follow. From the saddle turn left and start climbing.

You break out of forest at about 4500'. This is also where the views start, dominated by the Monte Cristo mountains.

Follow the ridgetop to the first summit at 4800'. From here it is about 4 miles to Benchmark Mt. (5800') with quite a bit of up and down. The views get progressively more spectacular, and there a lot of opportunities for telemarking the sides of the ridge. If you have a couple of days there are many spots for snow camping, and enough great slopes to wear yourself out on.

There don't seem to be many visitors there in the spring when there is snow around, and those that do show up rarely go beyond the first summit, which is where the fun really starts. About 16 miles roundtrip, with about 4500' elevation including ups and downs.

Getting there: Take Hwy 2 to Index and turn north on NF Skykomish River Road (FS road 63) for about 18 miles. Park at the West Cady Ridge/Quartz Creek parking area, or, if it's full of snow, you can easily park alongside the road (2500'). Trail park pass required.
