Northwest Hiking Trails

Annette Lake

Trip report by: Jeff Renner

"I would definitely recommend this trip to a friend."

One weekend in late September, our group backpacked up to Annette Lake. The 2.8 mile trail begins with gentle switchbacks, but then gradually increases after the first mile. Most of this popular trail winds through forest, with occasional stretches offering views across the valley. The vine maples were beginning to change color, particularly in avalanche chutes. The last mile of this trail offers a more gentle challenge after gaining roughly 1600' of elevation.

There are wonderful campsites near the small lake, with views toward the peaks which surround this lake. We did observe some trout rising near sunset, but they were beyond our reach. Dedicated fishermen might pack up a small inflatable raft. But this isn't a hike for carrying excess weight. The only drawback is the amount of noise from the interstate during the last half mile of descent. But that certainly isn't a problem for most of the hike, or at the destination. Our group unanimously voted this as a trip they'd like to do again.

The trailhead can be reached off I-90 by taking the Denny Creek Exit. Turn Right at the stop sign, just ahead will be excellent signage pointing the way to the parking lot. Be certain to have bought your Trail Pass!
