Northwest Hiking Trails

PhotoAlaska Lake, ALW

Trip report by Reuben Slasor

I arrived at the trailhead at 8:45AM and there were two cars in the parking lot. The first two miles of trail is covered with all kinds of wildflowers. I bumped into a wild turkey after three miles and chased him until I could get a good picture.

Photo: Alaska Lake (Slasor photo).

When I came to Gold Creek, I had three options for crossing it: Use the tree one hundred yards south of the trail crossing; use the snow bridge two hundred yards up from the trail crossing; or take my chances trying to ford. I used the tree to cross and used my sandals to cross the next three streams.

I lost the trail in the snow and hiked one quarter mile until I found it again. The hike from here up to the lake is a nasty 1100' almost straight up. When I finally arrived at Alaska Lake it was eighty percent frozen, as I expected. This is a great hike if you love peace and quiet and enjoy a challenge. I was the only person at the lake and I only ran into five people on the way back to my truck.

Stats: 5.5 miles, elevation gain 1600'.

Getting there: Take I-90 east to exit 54, Hyak, then turn left, go under I-90, and turn right. After you go over Gold Creek, turn left on the dirt road. Follow the dirt road until you come to a gate. You will need to park at the gate and hike the dirt road until you hit the trailhead.
